Why should you get up early?
Oprah
Winfrey and Michelle Obama are among the many who have managed to wake up to
the sun. To step into the day . . even if it feels like the middle of the night
outside. There's nothing wrong with that. In fact, maybe I should do the same
thing someday when I have kids or finally own a business. And let's say that in
a certain season of your life, you really have to wake up in the wee hours of
the morning to maintain a work/life balance, you have my full respect.
For others,
and for the sake of the 9- or 5-year-old boy or girl, let me suggest an
alternative. I did not wake up at 5 a.m. every day during this week-long
experience. What I did do is get up earlier than my usual alarm clock, and I
think that's the whole problem.
During a
typical week, I get up at 8 a.m.:
- Don't rush to get out of bed.
- Train in the morning, which experts
say is most effective.
- Prepare breakfast.
- Put on acceptable makeup and
clothes.
- Show off.
On days
when I managed to wake up closer to 5 a.m., I found I had time I wasn't sure
how to fill up. I recently learned that Oprah reads Bowl of Saki in the
morning, so I subscribed to the email, but never seemed to access it until I
open my computer for work. She and others also meditate in the morning, so I
also set my om, which I have always found beneficial. Still, this was not my
first rodeo to try morning routines: I've tried these things in the past and
found them extremely helpful and rewarding, but these are not activities I am.
particularly inclined to undertake at 5 a.m.
I think the
real lesson we can learn from these successful people is to master your
morning, whatever that looks like for you. Wake up early enough to do any small
act, whether it's setting goals for the day, exercising in 20 minutes, or just
walking around your house doing nothing . No matter where you are in life, we
could all benefit from feeling less tired and taking time for ourselves.
