Reasons to learn a second language as a child
Learning a
foreign language is easier when you are a child. Experts point out that between
early childhood and the age of six the brain has greater plasticity, and there
is a high sensitivity to languages, which makes learning them faster.
The ability
to acquire the accent of a native speaker is reduced every year after puberty,
which makes learning a language more difficult in adulthood.
It is important to note that neurological studies indicate that learning two languages at the same time do not create confusion in children, as they can assimilate both and store them in the same brain area.
Thanks
to a second language, linguistics improves:
Children have a great capacity to learn and absorb knowledge and internalize any language. Thus, being in contact with a foreign language from an early age will help them to have excellent linguistic skills and fluency. In addition, children will be able to acquire more quickly than adults the four linguistic skills necessary for good communication: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Bilingual
children have better memory and better cognitive development:
In
childhood, human beings can memorize naturally, through recognition
(identifying something seen or heard), and recall (retrieving information about
something experienced).
This means
that they will have better memory and mental flexibility, better multitasking,
critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and greater creativity.
In
conclusion, not only should we take advantage of children's brain capacity to
assimilate other languages, but also of the time of life they are in: they have
more time to dedicate to learning during the school stage, and they are not
afraid of making mistakes: this makes them more willing to learn and to
pronounce.

If
you had children, would you teach them languages from an early age?

What
languages would you teach them?
This was a really nice post, I believe that learning a second language when you are in childhood has a lot of benefits as you said in your post. When I'll become mom I really want to teach at least two more languages to my babies apart from Spanish. I'm not sure about which ones, but English is the first option, I know a little bit of Deutsch but it's so complicated for that reason Portuguese or French could be another options. I'll think in this, thanks for posting, keep doing it! C:
